What’s not to love about candid wedding photos? As a Jackson Hole wedding photographer, one of my top requests from my couples is to capture the candid moments of their elopement day. There is just something really special about having a truly authentic moment captured forever! Which is why I want to share with my fellow photographers, as a photography mentor, how to achieve stunning candid photos.
Preparation
It does take some preparation to achieve stunning candid wedding photos. Unfortunately, not everyone feels comfortable in front of the camera. But that is okay, because we can help them feel confident and comfortable with a little preparation!
I always send my clients an email a few days prior with some tips to help them look good and feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Here are three of my tried and true tips for stunning candid photos to share with your couples!
Be In The Moment
The most important part of any elopement day is your couples experience. And if they are focussed on the day and each other, then every photo will be a great one! So, advise them to try and focus on each other, their feelings and to enjoy every moment.
Smile All Day
Remind your couples to smile as they go about the day. A smile as they are getting ready or exchanging rings, or really any moment in their day, looks a lot better than a focused or concentrated expression that we fall into without even thinking about it! This is something you can also remind them through the day.
Stay Close
I always encourage my couples to stay close together as we travel between locations, so they can be captured in candid moments together. Encourage them to hold hands, smile, and even steal a kiss every once in a while! These type of candid photos add great variety and movement to the couples gallery, which is something that will help you stand out!
I found that keying my clients into my process for candid wedding photos leaves room for more comfort and confidence when it comes time to actually take their photographs!
