As a Jackson Hole photographer I get this question a lot from friends and family. Because I capture a lot of elopements throughout the year, it comes up in conversation. Others want to know, why do people elope! So whether you yourself have wondered this, or you want to know if you should elope. Here are 5 reasons people elope.
Self-care
A common misconception others have when it comes to eloping, is that it is selfish. This couldn’t be further from the truth! An elopement is meant to be more for self-care. Think of it this way, wedding planning is A LOT. A lot of stress, a lot of money, a lot of communication, and emotionally can be, well, a lot. When you elope, you cut out so much stress and planning. It is easier on the bride and groom, and easier on their relationship.
It’s Your Day!
Often times we see that wedding days revolve around all of the things that make up a wedding. It can revolve around keeping to a strict timeline, working with vendors, your wedding guests, the food, cocktails, the list goes on! But for an elopement, it all revolves around you and your relationship.
You Don’t Owe Anyone Anything
Many couples feel that they owe it to their families to have a big wedding. Inviting everyone, from your distance relative to your parents co-workers. It can so easily become a social event rather than a sacred day. Remember, you don’t owe anyone anything! But you do owe it to yourself, and your relationship, to stay true to how you want to celebrate.
Your Own Traditions
I love traditions! And so many of them are unique to your culture and family. However, there may be some traditions that are expected of you, that you would rather not take part in. And that is okay! When you elope you get to choose what traditions to keep without the social pressure of what guests will expect. In addition, you can create your own new traditions!
You Deserve To Have No Regrets
Your life is worth living unapologetically! When asked why do people elope, I often think of how some would regret it if they didn’t. They would regret skipping out on the adventure. They would regret spending a large sum of money. And ultimately, they would regret not getting married exactly how they want to! So don’t have any regrets! Elope with just you and your person. Or maybe invite a small party to help you party. But wither way, plan your elopement the way you have dreamt it!
