This is the first question I get asked for almost every engagement session. What should we wear? As a Grand Teton wedding photographer, I know it can be stressful to pick out the perfect outfit for your engagement session. My goal is to help make this decision easier because I believe everything about your wedding (even the planning) should be fun!
By following these three tips below, I guarantee you will have a blast during your session and love your photos forever!
TIP #1 – COMFORT & GLAM
Wear what makes you feel comfortable and pretty/handsome.
When you feel amazing, it totally shows! The way you move and interact with the camera will be more fun and flawless if you feel awesome in your clothes. On the same note, when you are uncomfortable and constantly fixing your outfit the photos turn more stale. This is the reason why my number one piece of advice for choosing what to wear in your engagement session is to find an outfit that makes you feel amazing!
Tip #2 – COLOR CHOICES
Choose your colors based on the look and feel you are wanting in your engagement photos. You can see in these two photos below that the color choices make a huge difference in the overall style of the images. Both of these photos were taken in the same location, same day and same lighting. The rusty orange dress adds a lot more contrast and warmth to the photos. The white clothing keeps the images more soft and airy.
I advise my couples to look at images on Pinterest and identify what they like and don’t like. Usually there is a common theme in color and style of clothing in the photos you are pinning.
When you identify what you like then you can pull together outfits that are comfortable and make you feel pretty/handsome based off of the color palette and style you have chosen.
Tip #3 – CONSIDER YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION BACKDROP
Think about your location. What background have you chosen for your engagement session? What are the colors, tones, and textures there? Is it an evergreen pine backdrop or an airy beach scene?
You might want to stand out from the background. Keep that in mind as you make wardrobe choices. If you have a lot of green trees where you will be then light, pale colors will really pop. Just like the orange dress pops against the sand.
OR, you may want less contrast like these images of the couple in white clothing on the sandy hills of the Little Sahara Dunes. The choice is yours! Again, look at other photos to determine what look you like best.
I hope these tips help you in creating the timeless, genuine photos you are wanting. Remember that it doesn’t have to be complicated, and if you only choose to follow the first rule of finding something comfortable that makes you feel amazing… that will go a long way. Don’t stress and have fun with it!
